TIP! When preparing a meal for someone who is important such as a new date or your boss, you should cook something that you are really good at making. Avoid any new recipes or ones that rely on unfamiliar ingredients or techniques.

You can make healthier mashed potatoes with the same taste and texture you love by substituting cauliflower for potatoes in equal proportions. Cauliflower has a kind of bland taste that mixes well with potatoes and the other ingredients in them. Cauliflower is also the same texture and color of potatoes when mashed so it’s a great way to add more veggies, while lowering calories from classic mashed potatoes.

Fresh Basil

Are you using fresh basil to cook with? In a glass put a lot of fresh basil inside. Submerge the stems in water. Store it on the counter of your kitchen; it will stay fresh for weeks. You can even promote the growth of roots if you replace the water from time to time. If this happens, trim the basil once in a while. This promotes continued growth, which means you have fresh basil at your disposal well into the future.

TIP! If you are intending to use skewers when you cook, do not forget to soak them in water for at least half an hour before you use them if they are wooden. Being soaked in the water prevents them from getting burned when exposed to the cooking heat.

Once in awhile, burgers stick to the cooking surface making it nearly impossible to get them off in one piece. Brush the grill with oil so that food does not stick to it. Vegetable oil works great and will not make your grill greasy.

A great source of protein for your diet can be found in beans and tofu. Both can be purchased at just about any grocery store. Make a yummy meat alternative by pan frying the tofu with some seasonings. Soak and cook the beans with herbs, seasonings, and bits of meat for a flavorful soup, burrito filling, dip or other protein-rich application.

When buying a recipe’s ingredients, read the labels. There can be some ingredients in foods that are unhealthy. You need to make sure what you are purchasing is not high in sugar or sodium, as they are known to cause terrible health problems when consuming too much.

TIP! To properly cook a pumpkin, halve it vertically first. Put each half, cut side down, on a separate baking sheet.

The simplest way to prepare a pumpkin for cooking is to half it by cutting the pumpkin in half. Next, set each of the two pieces on a separate baking sheet, taking care to place each one cut side down. The next step is putting a little bit of water on your baking sheets, you then want to bake the pumpkins at around 350 degrees Fahrenheit periodically checking them for about an hour.

Replace the standby liquids of milk and water in recipes to mix things up. Juices, beef broth, or vegetable broth can all be used as a substitute for water. Rather than using milk, think about yogurt, buttermilk or sour cream. Try making your recipes stand out and more nutritious by interchanging your liquids.

Every six months to one year, replace spices that have grown dull. When spices are stored for too long, their flavor degrades, resulting in a less potent spice. When you know you’re not going to be using a spice for a long time, give it away to someone in your family or to a friend before it loses its flavor.

TIP! Carefully measure the oil you cook with. By measuring how much oil you use when cooking, you can lower fat levels in your meals better than if you just pour the oil straight from bottle to pan.

Make preparing a complicated meal easier by doing some preparation the night before. Get everything together beforehand; ensure you have all the ingredients, and chop or measure anything you can in advance. When you are ready to start cooking, all you have to do is combine the ingredients and cook them.

For an improvement to your pasta sauce, save some of the water used to cook the pasta. Save approximately 1/4 cup of water after cooking your pasta. When you mix the pasta with this sauce, add the water as well. Your sauce will be thicker and creamier due to the starch provided by the water from the pasta.
